◎英語演講其實很簡單，只要把握三個S就夠了；所謂3S’s，就是（一）Stand up.站起來。 （二）Say what you have to say.說出你該說的話。 （三）And sit down.坐下。

[A]以下先參考七則古今有名的演講範例。

【一】基督教佈道家葛理翰博士，於1956年耶誕節，在紐約體育館向數萬名聽眾所發表之演講片段。

  Did you know that you can really live any way that you want to live and there’s nothing that God can do about it? 

You’re not a puppet on a string; you’re not a mechanical toy that God winds up and turns you loose and you do what you’re supposed to do. You’re made made in the image of God. You’re supposed to do. You’re made in the moral image of God…. You can choose! You can choose the kind of life you’re going to lead. If you want to lead a life totally away from God. Pleasing your own flesh. Your own desires, under the control of your own will without any restraints, without any Lordship of Jesus Christ, go ahead and do it! 

No, you cannot escape Jesus. You can try, but you can’t do it. 

If Jesus claimed to be God knowing that he was not, then of course he’s a liar. If Jesus thought he was god and didn’t know the difference, he was a maniac. But if Jesus Christ is who he claims to be , God in the flesh, then nothing else counts except to know him. With all of our scientific and technological achievements…  with all of our intellectualism, we cannot escape Jesus. 

Everybody has to decide about Jesus. Who is he? What was he? What demands does he have on my life today? God said, “I’ll become a man!” 

And young people……, I want to tell you, that’s who Jesus Christ is! God became a man! And God in the form of Jesus Christ, born of a virgin walked among us, and he showed us what God is like. And if I want to know what God is like, I take a long look at Jesus. I watch him as he makes the blind man to see and the dumb man to talk and the dead man to rise. 

But that wasn’t why he came. He didn’t come just to live among us; he didn’t come just to teach us a new way of life. Jesus Christ came for another purpose. He came to die on the cross. 

You see, the Cross of Christ where he died for our sins, that was a judgment. Jesus said, “To this end was I born.” He was not accidentally put to death. And he said, “My God, why hast thou forsaken me?” at that moment in some mysterious way, God was judging his son, instead of us, he didn’t just give him to die, he gave him to sin, he became sin for us. 

你知道人能夠以自已希望的方式過活，而上帝對此卻無權過問嗎？  

人並非被線所操控的傀儡; 你也不是由上帝操控，任憑衪上緊或鬆開發條來支配你一舉一動的機械玩具。你是依照上帝的形象而創造的。你是依照上帝精神上的形象創造的‧‧‧  你可以選擇!你可以選擇自已希望的生活方式。如果你要過完全脫離上帝的生活，享受肉體的快樂、放縱自已的慾望、無拘無束任意而行，完全不受耶穌基督的支配，那就去做吧! 

不，你不能逃離耶穌。你可以試，但你不能去做。

如果耶穌知道自已不是上帝卻自稱是上帝，那衪當然是個騙子。如果耶穌不知道人與上帝之別卻自認為是上帝，那麼衪就是瘋子。但如果耶穌基督是正如衪所聲稱的具有肉體的上帝，那麼就沒有比認識衪更重要的事了。縱然憑藉我們所有的科學與工業技術成就‧‧‧或憑藉我們所有的知性，我們依然無法逃離耶穌。

每一個人都必須對耶穌做決定。衪是誰？衪是什麼？今天衪對我的生活有何召喚？上帝說：「我將變成一位凡人!」  

那麼年輕朋友們…，我要告訴你們，那個凡人正是耶穌基督!上帝變成一位凡人!因此上帝以耶穌基督的形體，由處女所生而在人間走動，同時衪向我們宣示上帝的模樣。而如果我想知道上帝的模樣，我只需凝視耶穌。我注視衪，因為衪使盲人能夠看見，使啞巴說話，使死人站起來。

但這並不是衪降臨人間的目的。衪降臨並非只為了生活在我們之中;衪降臨並非只為了教導我們一種新的生活方式。穌基降臨是為了別的目的。衪降臨是為了被釘死在十字架。  

你們看啊呀!耶穌為了我們的罪而被釘死於其上的十字架，正是上帝的審判。耶穌說：「我為此而生。」衪不是意外地被釘死。同時衪說：「我的天父，你為何捨棄我？」在這一刻上帝藉著某種神秘的方式，以審判自已的獨子來代替審判我們，上帝不僅是讓自已的獨子受死，而且讓衪的死成為罪。耶穌變成了我們的罪。

【二】麥克阿瑟（Douglas MacArthur, 1880-1964），1951離開日本時的演講。以下是該演講的結尾。

I am closing my fifty years of military service. When I joined the army, even before the turn of the century it was the fulfillment of all my boyish hopes and dreams. The world has turned over many times since I took the oath on the plain at West Point, and the hopes and dreams have long since vanished, but I still remember the refrain of one of the most popular barrack ballads of that day which proclaimed most proudly that old soldiers never die; they just fade away.

And like the old soldier of that ballad, I now close my military career and just fade away, an old soldier who tried to do his duty as God gave him the light to see that duty. Goodbye.

  我即將結束五十年的軍旅生涯。我從軍是在本世紀開始之前，而這是我童年的希望與夢想的實現。自從我在西點軍校的教練場上宣誓以來，這個世界已經過多次變化，而我的希望與夢想早已消逝，但我仍記著當時最流行的一首軍歌詞，極為自豪地宣示「老兵不死，只是凋謝」。

【三】甘迺迪就職演說片段。

To that world assembly of sovereign states, the United Nations, our last best hope in an age where the instruments of war have far outpaced the instruments of peace, we renew our pledge of support to prevent its becoming merely a forum for invective—to strengthen its shield of the new and the weak—–and to enlarge the area in which its writ may run.

      對於主權國家之世界會議的聯合國，在戰爭的手段遠超越和平的手段之今日，我們最後也是最大希望的聯合國，我們要更新我們支持聯合國的誓詞，防止它變成一個漫罵的場所，而要強化它對新入會國與弱小國家的保護，同時擴大其憲章到任何其所能及之地區。………..

All this will not be finished in the first one hundred days. Nor will it be finished in the first one thousand days, nor in the life of this administration, nor even perhaps in our lifetime on this planet. But let us begin.

      所有這些不會在前一百日內完成。也不會在前一千日內完成，也不會在我的任期內，甚至不會在我們在世的有生之年內完成，但讓我們開始吧！

【四】馬丁‧路德‧金恩牧師，在1963年8月27日於華盛頓發表的演講「I Have a Dream」之片段。

      I am happy to join with you today in what will go down in history as the greatest demonstration for freedom in the history of our nation.

Five score years ago, a great American, in whose symbolic shadow we stand today, signed the Emancipation Proclamation. This momentous decree came as a great beacon light of hope to millions of Negro slaves who had been seared in the flames of withering injustice. It came as the joyous daybreak to end the long night of their captivity.

But, one hundred years later, the Negro still is not free. One hundred years later, the life of the Negro is still sadly crippled by the manacles of segregation and the chains of discrimination. One hundred years later, the Negro lives on a lonely island of poverty in the midst of a vast ocean of material prosperity. One hundred years later, the Negro is still languished in the corners of American society, and finds himself an exile in his own land.

      今天我很高興與大家共同參加這次將會在我國歷史上名垂千古，為追求自由而舉行的最大一次示威運動。

在一百年以前，有位偉大的美國人簽署了奴隸解放宣言，而今天我們正是立足於他所象徵的影像下。這項重大的宣告對數百萬在苛酷的不公平烈焰下驚懼的黑人而言，不啻是一線偉大的希望之光。它的來臨就像愉悅的曙光結束了他們受到束縛的漫長黑夜。

I have a dream that one day this nation will rise up, live out the true meaning of its creed: “We hold these truths to be self-evident, that all man are created equal.”

 I have a dream that one day on the red hills of Georgia, sons of former slaves and the sons of former slave-owners, will be able to sit down together at table of brotherhood. I have a dream that one day even the State of Mississippi, a state sweltering with the heat of injustice, sweltering with the heat of oppression, will be transformed into an oasis of freedom and justice.

 I have a dream that my four little children will one day live in a nation where they will not be judged by the color of their skin but by the content of their character. I have a dream today.

I have a dream that one day down in Alabama, with its vicious racists, with its governor having his lips dripping with the words of interposition and nullification, one day right down in Alabama our little black boys and black girls will be able to join hands with little white boys and white girls as sisters and brothers. I have a dream today.

   今天我告訴你們，我的朋友！雖然我們面臨今天與明天的困難，但我仍有一個夢想。這是深植於美國之夢的一個夢想。我夢想著有一天這個國家將會站立，過著教義上所說：「我們秉持顯而易見的真理，那就是人類生而平等。」的真理生活。

【五】威爾森總統就職演說之片段。

    At last a vision has been vouchsafed us of our life as a whole. We see the bad with the good, the  debased and decadent with the sound and vital. With this vision we approach new affairs. Our duty is to cleanse, to reconsider, to restore, to correct the evil without impairing the good, to purify and humanize every process of our common life without weakening or sentimentalizing it. There has been something crude and heartless and unfeeling in our haste to succeed and be great.

      最後，我們終於對人生有一完整的認知，我們既看到好的也看到壞的，既看到墮落腐敗也看到健康活力，以這種認知，我們來處理新事物。我們的責任是去淨化、去重新考量、去修復、去糾正錯誤而不傷害好的、去淨化日常生活的每一步，使其具有人生，而非軟弱或感情用事，。我們急於成功就偉大事業，常常會租糙成事、冷酷無情。

    Nor have we studied and perfected the means by which government may be put at the service of humanity, in safeguarding the health of the Nation, the health of its men and its women and its children, as well as their rights in the struggle for existence. This is not sentimental duty. The firm basis of government is justice, not pity. These are matters of justice. There can be no equality or opportunity, the first essential of justice in the body politic, if men and women and children be not shielded in their lives, their very vitality, from the consequences of great industrial and social processes which they cannot alter, control, or singly cope with. Society must see to it that it does not itself crush or weaken or damage its own constituent parts. The first duty of law is to keep sound the society it serves. Sanitary laws, pure food laws, and laws determining conditions of labor which individuals are powerless to determine for themselves are intimate parts of the very business of justice and legal efficiency.

      我們也從來沒有研究改進政府措施，來服務人民、保障國家的健康活力以及子女的健全發展。這並非感情用事。政府乃是建立在正義而非憐憫之上。這事關正義。假如人民及子女，其生命與活力，在偉大工業與社會發展中，無法受到保護，那就沒有所謂的平等或機會，正這正是政治體制中的基本正義。老百姓面對這些發展結果是無法改變、控制或單獨應付的。社會必須留意，本身以能摧毀、削弱或損傷其成員。法律的首要職責即是維持健全的社會。衛生法、純淨食品法、勞動條件法等個從人無力決定的法律，都是正義與法律該處理的細節。

    This is not a day of triumph; it is a day of dedication. Here muster, not the forces of party, but the forces of humanity. Men’s hearts wait upon us; men’s lives hang in the balance’ men’s hope call upon us to say what we will do. Who shall live up to the great trust? Who dares fail to try? I summon all honest men, all patriotic, all forward-looking men, to  my side. God helping me, I will not fail them, if they will but counsel and sustain me!

      今天不是一個勝利的日子，而是奉獻的時刻。我們在此非聚集黨派的力量，而是聚集全體人民的力量。人民對我們有所期望；他們的生活正面臨緊要關頭。他們期望我們告訴他們，未來要做什麼。誰將擔起這偉大的信託？誰敢不去努力？我號召所有正直的人、所有愛這個國家的人、所有具前瞻性的人，站在我身邊。願上帝助我，只要這些人願提供建議與協助，我絕不會他們失望！

【六】二次世界大戰邱吉爾臨危受命之演說片段。

◎邱吉爾向國會發表「血、汗與淚」這篇演說時，二次世界大戰正逐漸進入白熱化的階段。德國納粹的軍隊在歐陸勢如破竹，對隔著英吉利海峽的英國則進行大規模的日夜轟炸，聲言要夷平倫敦，企圖迫使英國屈服。面對危急存亡的關頭，向來採取懷柔政策的前首相張伯倫（Chamberlain）已無法支撐大局，被迫在五月十日辭職下台。同一天，邱吉爾臨危受命，組織新政府，成為新的英國首相。

Blood, Sweat and Tears 血、汗與淚

    I considered it in the public interest to suggest that the House should be summoned to meet today. Mr. Speaker agreed, and took the necessary steps, in accordance with the powers conferred upon him by the Resolution of the House. At the end of the proceedings today, the adjournment of the House will be proposed until Tuesday, May 21, with, of course, provision for earlier meeting if need be. The business to be considered during that week will be notified to Members at the earliest opportunity.

為全國大眾的利益著想，我建議下議院今天應該召開會議。議長禮生已經同意，也按照下議院決議賦予他的權力，採取了必要的步驟。今天戚議結束時，將會提議下議院休會到五月二十一日星期二，當然，附帶的決議是，如有必要，可提早復會。休會一週期所考慮的事情獎會儘早通知各內閣閣員。

    I now invite the House, by the Resolution which stands in my  name, to record its approval of the steps taken and to declare its confidence in the new Government.

      現在依據我所簽署的決議，請求下議院將它同意行的步驟正式記錄下來，並宣示它對新政府的信任。

    To form an administration of this scale and complexity is a serious undertaking in itself, but it must be remembered that we are in the preliminary stage of one  of the greatest battles in history, that we are in action at many points in Norway and in Holland, that we have to be prepared in the Mediterranean, that the air  battle is continuous and that many preparations have to be made here at home.

     要組一個這種規棤而又這樣複雜的政府本來就是艱難的事情，但我們要記得，我們正處在歷史上最大一次戰爭的初期階段，我們在挪威與荷蘭很多地方正在作戰，我們必須在地中海地區做準備，空戰正在持續進行中，而在國內這裡也必須做很多準備。

    In this crisis I hope I may be pardoned if I do not address the House at any length today. I hope that any of my friends and colleagues, or former colleagues, who are affected by the political reconstruction, will make all allowance for any lack of ceremony with which it has been necessary to act.

     在這個危急存亡的時刻，如果今天我對下議院的演講不夠詳盡，還希望多予體諒。在這次政治改組中，希望受到影響的朋友。同事，或以前的再事能原諒我的失禮，這也是不得已的做法。

    I would say to the House, as I said to those who have joined this Government: “I have nothing to offer but blood, toil, tears and sweat.” We have before us an ordeal of the most grievous kind. We have before us many, many long months of struggle and of suffering.

       正如我對加入新政府的人員說過的，我現在也要對下院說：「除了血、苦幹，淚與汗之外，我沒有甚麼可以奉獻的。」我們面對的是一次最嚴苛的考驗。在我們面前的將是很長很長的艱苦歲月。

    You ask, What is our aim? I can answer in one word: Victory—victory at all costs, victory in spite of all terror, victory, however long and hard the road may be; for without victory, there is no survival. Let that be realized; no survival for the British Empire; no survival for all that the British Empire has stood for, no survival for the urge and impulse of the ages, that mankind will move forward towards its goal.

    But I take up my task with buoyancy and hope. I feel sure that our cause will not be suffered to fail among men. At this time I feel entitled to claim the aid of all, and I say, “Come, then, let us go forward together with our united strength.”

     但我滿懷快樂和希望，努力肩負起我的職責。我確信，我們的理想在人類之間不會遭到失敗。這個時候我覺得我有理由要求所有其他人的協助。我要說的是，「奮起吧，我們要團結一致，全力以赴，共同向前邁進。」

★在演說中，邱吉爾以他犀利有力的言詞，一再展現他作為一位領袖的堅定意志和剛毅果斷的性格。在前面七段中，他首先說明組閣的經過和國際局勢的發展。由於時機急迫，他一天之內便組成了一個代表各黨派團體一致的「戰爭內閣」（War Cabinet），快速鞏固領導中心，充分顯示他處事的魄力和明快果斷的作風。第八段至第十段是全篇演說最有力的部分。邱吉爾對他的決心、政策和目標都作了明確的宣示。他告訴英國人民：他的決心是：「除了血、苦幹、淚和汗之外，我沒有什麼可以奉獻的。」（I have nothing to offer but blood, toil, tears and sweat.）

★他的政策是：「儘我們最大力量，運用上帝賦予我們的一切能力，在海上、陸上和空中進行奮戰。」 (to wage war, by sea, land and air, with all our might and with all the strength that God can give us.) 他的目標是：「勝利~~不惜一切代價的勝利，不畏恐怖的勝利，勝利，不管道路可能多麼漫長艱苦；因為沒有勝利，就無法生存。」(Victory–victory at all costs, victory in spite of all terror, victory, however long and hard the road may be; for without victory, there is no survival.) 這幾句鏗鏘有力的話，已成了戰時英國人用來相互激勵的名言。而邱吉爾自己更是以身作則，抱定與倫敦共存亡的決心，無論德機轟炸多麼慘烈，他都堅守倫敦，沒有離開過倫敦一步。

★就在邱吉爾這種堅定果決的領導下，，英國始能上下一心，人人士氣高昂，奮起抗敵，終於粉碎德國納粹的企圖，扭轉整個戰局，贏得最後的勝利。因此在英國人的心目中，邱吉爾是國家民族的救星，也是國家民族的驕傲。而他這篇「血、汗與淚」的演講，也將永垂青史，成為見證二次世界大戰最有力的文獻！

【七】馬克吐溫的餐後演說：The Babies（俯首甘為孺子牛）

薩姆耳‧柯萊門斯(Samuel Clemens 1835~1910)為美國十九世紀著名的幽默演說家及寫實主義小說家。他出生於密蘇里州的佛羅里達鎮，後來在密西西比河畔的漢尼堡市度過童年。一八五七年他當了密西西比河上蒸汽船的領航員。美國南北戰爭爆發時，他失業了。於是一八六二年他赴美國西部，在內華達州當報紙編輯及新聞記者，並開始創作小說。他回憶在密西西比河上擔任領航員時，常聽到叫聲”Mark Twain” Mark意思為「記號」，Twain意思為「二」。Mark Twain指「水深二噚」，也就是說蒸汽船可以通過的「安全水深」。於是他就取Mark Twain「馬克吐溫」為筆名。這一篇餐後演說「俯首甘為孺子牛」The Babies，於一八七九年十一月十三日發表於駐芝加哥的田納西陸軍晚宴上。本演說是拿嬰兒開玩笑，內容十分詼諧，逸趣橫生。

Mr. Chairman And Gentlemen: —“The Babies!”  Now, that s something like—.  We haven t all had the good for-tune to be ladies: we have not all been generals, or statesmen; but when the toast works down to the babies, we stand on common ground—for we’ve all been babies. [Laughter.]

It is a shame that for a thousand years the world’s banquets have utterly ignored the baby, as if he didn’t amount to anything! If you, gentlemen, will stop and think a minute— if you will go back fifty or a hundred years, to your early married life and recontemplate your first baby—you will remember that he amounted to a good deal— and even something over. [Laughter.]

  隨著嬰兒的成長過程，你學到了多少東西！多愁感的年輕帶妻常仍然相信那句美麗古老的俗諺。那就是說，當嬰兒睡眠的時候會面帶微笑，那是因為天使們對他說悄悄話。這是非常美的諺，但是「理由太薄弱了」———-朋友！它只是肚子脹氣啊！(笑聲) 如果這個嬰兒在他例行的時刻提議去散步一在凌晨兩點半—–你不是都得立刻起床，並且說………..那正是你自已想要建議的事嗎？啊！你真是嚴守紀律。當你穿著「赤裸的軍服」(笑聲)在臥房煩躁地來回走動時，你不但牙牙學語地說些毫無尊嚴的兒語，而且你甚至會調整你的軍人聲音，議著去唱催眠曲，例如「寶貝的搖籃在樹梢，搖啊搖」。對一支田納西州的陸軍而，這是保的景觀呀！同時對鄰居們而口，這是何等的折磨，因為在方圓一英里內，並不是每一個人都喜歡在凌晨三點鐘聽軍歌。(笑聲)而且，那種事持續了兩三小時以後，這時你的小毛頭暗示說沒有任何事情比運動與噪音更適合他，同時建議即使要花上整個晚上也要在那條陣線上堅持到底—–你就持續不懈吧！你到底怎麼做？你只好奮戰下去，真到你跌落最後的戰溝而死。(笑聲)

    在美式的宴會中，主人或主賓往往會利用在正餐結束，甜點尚未端上來之前的幾分鐘空檔，做簡短的演說。這種餐後演說（after-dinner speech）往往有一個主題，其目的不外乎針對某個節日或個人成就等的祝賀。

　　在這篇演說中，馬克吐溫題然是宴會的主賓。他針對一群美國大邱演講。我們知道，一篇演說如果要引起聽眾共鳴，最好選擇與聽眾共同的經驗為主題。馬克吐溫與美國大皆不曾當當過女、將軍、詩人或政治家，但都當過嬰兒。因此他選嬰兒當主題，不但適合宴會時輕鬆的氣氛，而且容易引起共鳴。

　　　第二、三段的幽默主要來自強烈的對比───勇敢剛強的軍人對上柔弱無助的嬰兒。不管軍人多麼勇猛，一碰上柔弱的嬰兒則甘拜下風。馬克吐溫用許多例子製造笑果。例如嬰兒一到家庭總部，軍人就變成他的男或保鑣；嬰兒的軍令如山，必須急速執行；軍人可面對槍林彈雨，但嬰兒抓他的鬍鬚、拔他的頭髮、或擰他的鼻子時，他必須乖乖接受；在隢晨兩點半嬰兒一下令赤身裸體的軍人必須立刻起身唱軍哥等，頗具笑果。換言之，軍人雖有「雖千萬人吾亦往矣「的氣慨，但是一碰上蠻橫無理的嬰兒，則必俯首委屈求全。這種情形魯迅在一九三二年十月十二日的（自嘲）詩中的名句「橫眉冷對千帶指，俯首甘為孺子牛」差可比擬。

　　英國浪漫詩華滋渥斯（Ｗilliam Wordsworth）有一句名詩“the child is the father of the man.” 意思是說，藉著研究小孩的個性，就可以知道他將來長大會變成怎樣的人。馬克吐溫顯然是把華滋渥斯的那句詩改為“the child is the prophecy of the man.” 如果小孩是成年人的預言，那麼馬克吐溫舉了許多未來的偉人為例，不正是說我們不可以輕看搖籃中的嬰兒嗎？

He has spent most of his business career in St. John’s Newfoundland on the east coast of Canada and is a specialist in promoting export sales of Canadian seafood.    Because he is so familiar with Canadian tastes in fish, we look forward to his valuable assistance as we expand our sales of seafood to Canada in the future.     There are many differences in customs between our two countries, but I hear east coast Canadians do eat raw fish. So that part of our lifestyle should be no problem for him.         While Mr. Morrison is here, there is a lot we can learn from him, besides English, of course, and we hope he will return to Canada in four years’ time with the feeling he knows Taiwan better, too.

He has has been sent here by his company, British Chocolate Limited, with whom we have established a joint venture, to advise us on the production of their world famous chocolate. He will work in our new plant at Wuku and will cooperate very closely with our factory supervisor, Mr. Chang. Life in Taipei is quite different from life in London. It gives me great pleasure to introduce Dr.Robert Dundee, who will be with us for two years.   Dr. Dundee, who hails Sydney, is a famous zoologist who has done a lot of research on the prevention of respiratory in cattle the University of Sydney.    Since we deal a lot in milk products, it is very important for us to keep our cattle as healthy as possible, and I am more than certain that Dr. Dundee will be of great benefit to us. He will be working very closely with our research staff at Yangmei and will report directly to the chief of our center there, Dr. Wang. As he is accompanied by his wife and child, I hope all of us will help any way we can. I wish him and his family a pleasant stay with many fond memories to take back.

Dr. Bush is a livestock breeder specializing in cattle. As you all know, beef is very expensive in Taiwan and many consumers complain about its price. We hope through the cooperation of Dr. Bush and our breeders in Taoyuan to be able to discover cheaper and better ways of producing beef, thus benefiting our customers. There are many differences in customs between our two nations. And I don’t have to tell you that Taoyuan is much colder than Wellington in winter. So I trust you will give him a warm reception. Dr. Bush. Welcome to Taiwan and welcome to our company.

As most of you may realize, settling down in a new city is very difficult, even for bankers, and many of you have taken the time and trouble to help me. Let me give you one example of this kindness. A few days after my arrival, I went with one of the gentlemen here to a car dealer. After almost agreeing to buy, he pulled me aside and said, “That car’s lousy.” Not knowing what he meant, I looked very surprised. He then said, “That car is lousy. You know. I added a new word to my vocabulary, and two, I saved money by not buying that car. Thank you very much.

About three years ago, there was a competition for architects to submit plans for a museum to be built here in Boston. Of the many plans sent, you chose the one submitted by my company, and today, we are holding this party in the building we designed. It is not easy to design a museum. One has to think about its purpose, the people’s taste, the budget, and so on. But thanks to the cooperation of the chairman and his board, we finished on time and were within the budget. I hope that this museum will serve the people of Boston and enrich their lives. I also sincerely hope that many visitors from all over the world will come to see it. I thank you.

Mr. President, ladies and gentlemen:      First of all, I would like to express my deepest gratitude for the party you have prepared for me.   A few years back, when your company and mine started this joint venture, it was very difficult to import marine products into Taiwan. There was a lot of red tape and the same items would have to be checked here in Sydney, and again on arrival in Kaohsiung. This was a very frustrating and time-consuming process. But after a long period of negotiation between our respective governments, it was agreed that one Chinese inspector would be stationed in Sydney and an Australian inspector in Kaohsiung. Since then, things have gone much more smoothly and I hope this state of affairs will continue in the future. Once again, I would like to thank you for this party and for your kind cooperation.

Of course, they are finding English difficult, as I am, but their teachers have been very patient and have gone out of their way to help them.  I am sure I will enjoy working with all of you, and I sincerely hope our insurance business will prosper. Yours is still a relatively new operation, but already it is  making a name for itself. Your competitors will certainly have to work very hard to keep up with you.      Upon my return to Taiwan, I will make a full report on your factory and it is my hope that one of these days we can do business together. We hope it will help to bring you good luck. Sometime during our stay, we would like to be able to see some of the things which can be found only in Australia, like kangaroos and koala bears. As I look out into the audience, I am happy to see many of last year’s participants who have returned to continue their support. And may I extend a warm welcome to those who are here for the first time. I feel especially good about having the meeting here in Hsitou, Taiwan this year. As you all know, we Chinese really love and respect nature, even to the extent that it is probably the basis of our deepest religious roots. The atmosphere of this natural setting can help us to awaken our inner feelings, and inspire us to seek a proper relationship between ourselves and the natural environment. Let me encourage each of you to visit the pond here when our meeting finishes this afternoon. Perhaps we can begin tomorrow’s activities by sharing impressions of the here and now. Ladies and gentlemen: Tonight marks the opening meeting of the World Social Welfare Activities Steering Committee. It is our responsibility and privilege to ascertain the direction of our methods and types of assistance to the needy and underprivileged peoples of the world. Starting off the program will be Mr. ho and Mr. Garcia reporting on the recent disastrous hurricanes in the Pacific. Also of immediate concern is Mr. Quai’s information regarding the current African famine. Our research and analysis of these current problems, and proposed long-term solutions will undoubtedly have a considerable influence upon the kinds and amounts of relief that will immediately be distributed to the victims. Of less critical concern, but requiring a high priority for our attention, is the deforestation of the tropics. But these topics will just start the ball rolling. All of you have been asked to submit prospective topics for our meetings, and any relevant research. Each person’s insight and hard work is appreciated. And now, may I present Mr. ho and Mr. Garcia.

I am glad to see some of my friends from American Business Machines are also in attendance tonight.    It s no secret! We are also in all optimistic about our with major project: the Wizard Word Processor with a spellcheck- dictionary built in, and a daisy wheel for letter- perfect printing. Also, there is an input for an optional floppy-disk or computer. We’ll let the other companies fiddle around with dots and grimmicks, which still will not give letter- perfect quality for some time to come. Meanwhile, marketing suggests that within months of its release this inexpensive unit should capture a considerable share of the world market of people using Romanized letters.     So all of you wizards out there, do your stuff and create your magic!

Good morning, gentlemen. It is my pleasure to be here as a representative of the Japan Fisheries Commission. In case you don’t remember, my name is Masayuki Chigusa. I am glad to see that we were able to get together in this manner for private talks. Often in Japan matters are discussed at informal talks, just like here, until a consensus of opinion is reached. Then it is presented by the spokesman of the group. So, often commitments cannot be made without discussing matters democratically regardless of the merits of a proposal. Another thing I hope that you’ll pear with is the Japanese tendencies of stoicism, reserved opinions, and the desire to see all sides of the picture before making a decision. So don’t get the feeling that I’m a wet blanket if I don’t react enthusiasm, especially if all viewpoints have not been considered. And, on my side, I’ll try to communicate my feelings as honestly as possible, to everyone’s benefit. Let’s hope for fruitful talks that will help to shape improved relations.

I am representing women in the Asian Countries Delegation of the World Women’s Rights Council. Although many people in the West feel that all Orientals seem very much alike, we all find our own particular nationalities and cultures unique. Of course, we share a common background and history in many respects. But our present-day languages, styles of dress, and daily lifestyles vary considerably. The current economic and political systems in each of the Asian countries are important in influencing each of us in different ways.   But if there is an underlying connection among Asian women, it must be in the unfair treatment we receive from chauvinistic men. Simply by our gender, we are judged to be second-class citizens. Only by organizing and finding external support can we hope to ever break out of our inferior status.     Ladies, let’s talk about what we’re going to do about it!

哈囉，湯姆，傑瑞，杜飛，還有露西。       再看到你們大家，真是高興。現在，如果你們還是覺得我的名字很難唸，那是魏妤如。我是世界女權協會的西洲國家代表團婦女的代表。       雖然許多西方人士認為所有的東方人似乎都很像，我們都發現我們有自己特別的民族性和獨特的文化。當然，在許多方面我們有共同的背景和歷史。但我們現在的語言、服裝風格、以及日常生活方式卻有相當程度的不同。當前每一個亞洲國家的經濟和政治體系，在許多方面影響到我們每一個國家，這一點是很重要的。       但如果在亞洲婦女之間有隱而不見的聯繫，那必定會受到具有沙文主義之男性的不平等對待。僅僅因我們的性別，我們就被判為二等公民。只有經由組織、尋求外來的支援，我們才能指望超脫出我們低落的地位。       各位女士，讓我們來討論我們怎麼做吧！

Good morning, gentlemen. My name is Chen Dah-han. I really didn’t intend to talk today, since my primary role is to provide assistance to Ms. Garfield, who is handling the Food circus at the event. However, since the point has come up regarding the division of space in the pavilion, I will give you the information I have on it. There are twenty-seven countries which have expressed an interest in serving their own countries’ special foods. We have set a size limit on each stall of 20 feet by 25 feet, which includes preparation and sales areas. Centrally located, there will be a common lunch area with seating for five hundred people, although it will probably be used as a rest area as much as a place for eating.   I’ll be happy to answer any other questions regarding the plan for the Food Circus. If there is nothing else, I’ll just sit down now and let you get on with your business.

Hello, Mr. And Mrs. Doyle. I’m Ching-Shia. It’s nice to meet you at last. I’m afraid I’m not very good at getting around in airports, so it’s such a relief to see your smiling faces and your shin with “Ching-Shia” on it. I’m sure that I’m the only person here today with that name!   You may remember from our correspondence that I gave my occupation as “English teacher in junior high school. “ But this doesn’t necessarily mean that I can speak English fluently. Just like music composers who aren’t particularly fine performers, many English teachers in Taiwan are more well-versed in the grammatical aspects of the language than in actually speaking it.   But part of what I hope for on this trip is to be able to brush up on my English. I would like to go to the language lab about an hour a day, and then just spend the rest of my time doing the usual daily activities.    So please, don’t do anything special because I’m here. And meanwhile, if I can assist you in any way, don’t hesitate to ask.

你是何姆斯先生和太太嗎？喔，我好高興。我跑遍整個機場找場找你們。來這一趟真不容易。       到機場途中，就在檢查站，我的剪刀被沒收了，我應該到這兒才可以取回。然後，到了機場，我被擋住，因為我的行李超重了，我不清楚可以帶多少，可以帶什麼。每一件行李付了七十五美元之後，我差點來不及，因為我手頭沒有足夠的新台幣付機場的稅。       然後，飛航又耽擱了，因為機場安全防衛發現了一只不知是誰的行李。結果發現是我超量行李中的一件！       飛行中，在我前面的美國人威脅要揍我，因為我在吸煙區吸煙，而他的座位在禁煙區邊。       我一去拿我的剪刀，填好行李遺失報告──稍後我再告訴你們──我們可以走了。

Good morning, Mr. And Mrs. Dean, and you must be Jamie, Jr. It’s nice to meet you. If I look a little nervous, don’t worry. It’s not because of you. Meeting people and making conversation just don’t come easy to me. There are two things I dread in this world: one is the dentist, and the other is speaking in public. （All laughs.） In Taipei there are always tremendous crowds commuting to work and going to major events. It is said that Chinese enjoy crowds. But not me! I really become uncomfortable around too many people. So, it feels good here in Oregon, where a person has plenty of elbowroom. Also, just talking to someone requires a mustering of courage. And when I am asked to give a speech in front of the class, sometimes, I really feel sick. Anyway, you are all so nice, and I do want to be able to communicate with you. So please, bear with me and help me to improve my confidence in speaking English.

Good evening, everybody. Once again we’re all together here. I can’t believe that it’s been two weeks already. But, as the saying goes, ‘Time flies when you’re having fun.’’ All of the members of the host families have been just wonderful. Every day the Chinese students have been telling me how kind you have all been, and about the interesting places that they have been taken. If we can come again next year, perhaps we can all go to the rodeo together. It seemed to be especially worthwhile to everyone who went. Of course all of you will become celebrities back in Taiwan, with students telling their friends and showing photographs of their lovely time here. As a small token of our appreciation, each student has a small wrapping cloth in traditional Chinese design, on which he or she has written the host’s name in Chinese characters.    Please let us know if you can visit us sometime Until then, you again, or as we say in Chinese, ‘Zaijian !’

都說台灣高山烏龍的香氣、喉韻舉世無雙，其他地方的茶難以匹敵，不過，名氣再大、品質再好，台灣適合種茶的山頭就那麼幾個，產量不可能再增加。因此，在高山烏龍之外，開創台灣另一種特色茶，就成了海拔1,000公尺以下、非高山茶區的新課題。

既然海拔高度無法改變，同樣是半發酵烏龍茶，低海拔生產的硬是比高山茶價位「矮」了一截，那麼何不另闢蹊徑，轉做全發酵的紅茶？

前幾年日月潭紅茶打響了名號，花蓮瑞穗鄉、南投名間鄉也急起直追，合力打造台茶另一波「紅金」傳奇。

台灣雖以烏龍、包種等半發酵「清香」茶著稱，但放眼全球茶市，紅茶才是市場主流（佔8成以上）。

事實上，早期台灣也以生產全發酵的紅茶和不發酵的綠茶為主。

日據時期，日本人從印度引進大葉種阿薩姆紅茶，在南投縣的魚池、埔里、日月潭等地栽植，除了回銷日本，也在其後的國府時代屢創外銷榮景。

曾經一只皮箱走遍北非、歐美67個國家的製茶工業同業公會顧問黃正敏（父親在1945年創立「惠美壽」名茶）指出，早期台灣茶以紅茶、綠茶外銷為主，外銷比例高達總產量的75～85％。

1970年代，隨著經濟發展，人工成本大幅提高，原以桃、竹、苗為主要產區的紅茶、綠茶無法與國際競爭，於是茶區逐漸南移，附加價值高的烏龍茶產量也日漸增加，再加上茶的內需不斷提高，於是台茶由外銷轉為內銷，目前外銷僅占總產量的15～20％，且紅茶、綠茶逐漸被烏龍取代。

It’s said that the high-mountain oolong teas of Taiwan are unmatched in aroma and flavor; no others come close. Yet despite their reputation and quality, there aren’t that many mountain areas in Taiwan fit for growing tea, so yields are limited. As such, a new quest arose: to develop distinctive teas other than high-mountain oolong that can grow at altitudes under 1,000 meters.

Since you can’t change the elevations of available land to grow more oolong tea, why not try something else? How about growing more affordable black teas-the fully fermented kind-at lower altitudes?

Over the past several years, Sun Moon Lake Black Tea has made a name for itself. And Rui-sui and Ming—jian Townships, respectively in Hua-lien and Nan-tou Counties, are hot on its tail, conspiring to form a new wave in Taiwan’s tea lore: a new “black gold.”

Though Taiwan is famous for its delicate, semi-fermented oolong and pou-chong teas, black tea reigns supreme in the global mainstream tea market, accounting for over 80% of sales.

Interestingly, Taiwan mostly produced fully fermented black teas and unfermented green teas during Japanese rule.

Back then, the Japanese introduced a large-leaf variety of Assam black tea from India, planting in places in Nan-tou -County such as Yuchi, Puli and Sun Moon Lake, to be sold in Japan. The subsequent Kuo-min-tang era saw the glory days of black tea exports.

Says Taiwan Tea Manufacturers’ Association advisor Jackson Huang, who traveled to 67 countries in Europe, North America and northern Africa with one suitcase (and whose father founded ABC Tea in 1945), exports made up 75-85% of Taiwan’s total production of black and green teas in those days.

In the 1970s, labor costs skyrocketed with the booming economy, and growers of black and green tea in Taoyuan, Hsin-chu and Miaoli were unable to compete internationally. Tea growers gradually moved southward thereafter, and production of high-value-added oolong tea began to increase. And with continuing growth in domestic demand, Taiwan tea makers started to turn from exports to domestic sales. Now exports account for only 15-20% of total production as black and green teas were gradually replaced by oolong tea.

WHERE literacy meets numeracy, enthusiasm meets scepticism and philosophy meets fun, there you find Martin Gardner. He earned his crust by writing, but his abiding interest was in maths, and his gift, or rather one of them, was to explain mathematical concepts in ways that made sense to non-mathematicians. Many of them not only understood what he wrote but also became infected with his love of maths, of its beauty and of its capacity to give satisfaction, if not delight, when its riddles were solved and its paradoxes explained. For 25 years he provided both the puzzlement and the demystification in a column in Scientific American.

Mr Gardner did not come to this task from MIT or Caltech. Indeed, he had no formal maths training after high school in Tulsa, Oklahoma. But he did come from a job in journalism, to be precise, from a post at Humpty Dumpty’s Magazine for Little Children, where among other tasks he helped with the designs, including all the cutouts. Cutouts also came his way when a conjuror introduced him to the hexaflexagon, a piece of paper folded into an almost flat six-sided shape that could be manipulated to reveal a series of different interiors one after another. This inspired him to write the article that launched his column, “Mathematical Games”, and with it a pastime now known as recreational maths.

Since this is a more benign, though almost equally addictive, version of its close relation, recreational drugs, it soon had a large following. Many were no doubt obsessive male teenagers and their fathers, epitomised perhaps by the followers of GeekDad, a blog that celebrates Geek Pride Day, nerdcore music and geek-chic fashion, as well as Mr Gardner. Some may have been sudoku, tredoku or futoshiki freaks, who buy daily newspapers, extract the puzzle pages and throw away the rest.

Others, however, were quite respectable. It is notable that Mr Gardner was one of the few popularisers of difficult subjects who earned the respect of serious thinkers, W.H. Auden, Noam Chomsky, Stephen Jay Gould and Douglas Hofstadter among them. Some, such as Roger Penrose (an Oxford mathematical physicist) and John Conway (a Princeton mathematician), owe some of their own celebrity to his writings about their work. No wonder it is sometimes said that Mr Gardner made mathematicians out of children and children out of mathematicians.

Maths, however, was far from being Mr Gardner’s only interest, even though it inevitably played a part in his most popular book, “The Annotated Alice”. This went through Lewis Carroll’s two Alice books, explaining the umpteen puns, jokes and allusions. He did the same for other works, including Coleridge’s “The Rime of the Ancient Mariner”, Chesterton’s “The Innocence of Father Brown”, Joyce’s “Ulysses”, Moore’s “The Night Before Christmas” and Baum’s “The Wonderful Wizard of Oz”.

This was micro stuff, but Mr Gardner did the big picture too. He could defend realism in the face of quantum physics, tackle infinity and nothing, venture into the realms beyond cultural relativism, test proofs of God and wonder whether Isaiah Berlin was a hedgehog or a fox. He wrote with lucidity about the works of computer scientists, philosophers and playwrights, always giving credit where it was due.

Logic conquers (almost) all

Yet he was far more than a synthesiser. Indeed, all his non-fiction—he also wrote novels, short stories and poetry—was rigorously analytical. And though he was shy, usually shunning his fans’ two-yearly “Gatherings for Gardner”, he was not afraid to speak his mind. Any beliefs he thought pseudoscientific, such as homeopathy, Scientology, creationism, anthroposophy, spoon-bending, astrology and flying saucers, he would dismiss with cool efficiency. Other ideas, such as Ronald Reagan’s beloved Laffer curve, were derided in spoof articles: Mr Gardner had a sense of humour, and used it to effect. But he was not malicious. Though he enjoyed hoaxes, he would sometimes turn them on himself, once writing, under a pseudonym, a withering review of one of his own works in the New York Review of Books.

Did he spread himself too thin? It is hard not to think that anyone who writes more books (70-plus) than many people have read, as well as numberless articles and essays, must be at the controls of a sausage machine, yet the sausages were usually good. The harder question is where it all came from, to which the only answer is himself—and reading.

Studying philosophy at the University of Chicago, and reading voraciously from Plato to Kant to H.G. Wells, he abandoned the Christian fundamentalism of his teenage years and acquired an enduring respect for rationalism and science. Along the way, he also came to love magic—not spells and sorcery, but the tricks and illusions of puzzlers and prestidigitators.

Perhaps this helps explain the belief in God that he came to in later life. His declaration of this belief caused, he admitted, profound shock to those who knew him only as a sceptic. But there was too much playfulness in Mr Gardner to make him yield entirely to reason. His faith, he said, was based on an “emotional turning of the will”, unsupported by logic or science. It was his way, perhaps, of recognising that mind and man are not synonyms.
